Cutomizing A Static Aircraft

There are a couple of things you can do to customize the static aircraft and still have it work with X-Plane.
They include:

  1. You can rename the object file,
  2. You can rename the texture(s), or
  3. You can rename both the object file and it's texture(s).
  4. You can also put either the object file and/or it's texture(s) into sub-catergory folders.

Note, before I describe how to do these in detail, one important thing I need to alert you to is that these modifications must be done before the model is placed in World-Maker. If they are done after a static aircraft has been placed, X-Plane may no longer render the model in the sim or render it distorted in some fashion.

To Rename The Object File:
This is by far the easiest customization step you can do. Just use your OS' "rename" method to change the file name, then when you goto place it in World-Maker you only need to look for the file uner the name you gave it.

To Rename The Texture(s):
This customizing step is similiar to the prior one, however it has one extra step you must perform. After you rename the texture(s), you must edit the object file so X-Plane will know where to find it's texture(s). Say you want to change the texture name from XXXX_OBJ to just XXXX. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the object file in a plain text editor.
  2. Look for the line that says something like this:
    "XXXX_OBJ	// texture"
  3. Change the "XXXX_OBJ" to "XXXX", this will tell X-Plane to look for a texture called "XXXX" instead of one called "XXXX_OBJ".

Say you decide to not only rename the texture(s), but also put them in a sub-folder, and the folder is named "XFolder". Change the "XXXX_OBJ" to read "XFolder:XXXX", this will tell X-Plane to look first for a folder called "XFolder", then a texture inside it called "XXXX"

For nighttime textures, (the ones with the letters "LIT" as the last letters in the name), the naming convension for the texture is the same as the daytime textures. If there is a texture called "XXXX_OBJLIT", just rename it to "XXXXLIT". You need not specify it in the object file, X-Plane will automatically use a texture with the letters "LIT" at the end of the name as a nighttime texture on an object where the texture "XXXX" is specified.

To Put The Object File In A Sub-folder:
This step is similiar to the one detailing renaming the file above, the only difference being is that when going to place the object, you will need to look for the name of the folder you put it in first and then the object name second.
