Kagoshima

Early morning view of Kagoshima and the volcano on nearby Sakurajima.

One of things Kagoshima is known for is of course its proximity to a rather active volcano, on the nearby peninsula Sakurajima (which used to be an island, but lava filled out the gap on side on the other side from Kagoshima).
It's a good place for a day trip, using the frequent ferries.

There's a good aquatic museum near the port. Very fine displays and lots to see.

Some sounds (MP3) which will show the contrasts, which in a way are typical of Japan; Both busy and noise and at the same time calm and quiet. Small restaurant, Kagoshima (884kB). This place had only six places and one counter and served things like fried noodles. Just "a hole in the wall" and a very good dinner. A short visit to a pachinko hall (941kB). Only time I went into one. I guess you can figure why. (The staff wore hearing protectors.)

Two impressive views of Sakurajima, which was quiet when we entered the museum.

Next: Nagasaki
