Our visit to Takayama was timed to coincide with
the festival, during which ancient mobile shrines
are taken out of their storage buildings and
pulled around the streets. They're very high and
don't turn very well, so it's not a quick business.
The shrines are taken out both in the evening and
during daytime. Lots of people come to Takayama during
the festival, so it's crowded in the streets, but
had a bit of luck and happened upon places where I
could see the shrines really close up.
