This is an account, with photos, of my trip to Japan in October 1999.
I wanted to have a vacation in Japan for several reasons, primarily I was interested in Japan as a country, some of my specific interests were to ride and photograph Japanese trains, see bonsai and Japanese gardens in their original setting and eat Japanese food. All of these goals were fulfilled.
I had a great time the four weeks I spent there.
Below this list are som miscellaneous images, sounds and some text. The account of the trip starts at the top of the list, each of these pages has a link to the next one:
(I'm planning a section with railway photos, but that's for the future.)
Many signs in Japan are this way: From a distance, you can
see it says for example "Menu" on them, but on closer
inspection, there's nothing more you can read unless you
understand Japanese. But in a way it is logical anyway, as
our letters are part of the Japanese written language.
Two typical views of what it looks like outside of
big cities, from a Shinkansen.
A bit of countryside seen from a lokal train out of
Takasaki.
The day after it's rained, you can see Fuji from Tokyo.
This view is from a Shinkansen going to Takasaki, but
still in Tokyo.
A very busy railway station. (1.5 MB)
Visit to the transport museum, with children driving a
train simulator. (1.77 MB)Railway photos from my trip to Japan.
