Quetzalcoatl: the feathered serpent
[First released on 15/Nov/2000 - Current version 5.60.02 on 06/May/2001]

I designed this fantasy plane some 15 years ago, on paper, when the time of personal computers did not started yet, not here at least. I could not imagine then that one day I would be able to model and "fly test" it.

When I developed the idea of this plane my only one guiding feeling was "the shape of the thing". In this case I tried to design a birdlike plane. Later I gave it the name of one Aztec's god, that one that have the ability to fly and that was also described as a serpent (there are some pyramids in Central America built after he).

Specifications (measured during flight tests):

Power Plant: 2 jet engines (30,000 lb)
Fuel capacity: 16,000 lb
Weight empty: 23,400 lb
Weight full: 54,000 lb
Jettisonable: 11,000 lb
Wingspan: 64 ft
Length: 56 ft
Fuel endurance: 4 hours (estimated)
Maximum ceiling: 130,000 ft
Maximum speed: 3.3 Mach
Airframe limit: 3.0 Mach

Equipped with Arresting Gear, Anti-Ice & Hoops
All its body textures was originally made by me and it sports a birdlike visual. The insignias are from Aztec's culture.

Full functional custom panel subdivided in 4 main subject areas: flight controls, navigation, weather and aircraft controls.
The difficult in modeling this plane was due its hull shape and most for the plane's beak. As X-Plane gives us few ribs to shape the fuselage (and few nodes in each rib) I had to break the fuselage in three major parts, so from the beak to the engines intakes I used the "fuse" part, from there to the plane's tail I used the "float" part to model the internal section (spine) of the body and the external section I did using the "nacelle" parts.

Flight Profile

The suggested cruise-power is at about 20% maximum engine throttle.

During takeoff you need to pull the stick a little back to keep the nose leveled, because depending on the weight on board and in consequence of the engines' cant, while getting speed the nose will dive in the runway tarmac.

SPECIAL MANEUVERS: you will like the acrobatics characteristics of this plane, specially in low speed, you can slip (fly) sideways, you can raise vertical, etc. You can do a 180 degrees directional turn, usually pivoting the entire plane with just the rudders, but be ready to counter act the rotation effect that the auto-stabilization system will engage.

It is amazing how far you can glide with this massive plane, probably because its wings shape, therefore to land you'll need to maintain the speed lower than 100 Kias.

  This plane can reach airspeed Mach 3.3 with full engine power without having afterburners, but if realistic failure option is set on, the wing will be tear up past Mach 3.

Versions History

VERSION 5.60.02 (06/May/2001)
(+) Added afterburners without extra thrust just to render the flames :)
(+) Added reverse-thrusters to help in braking the plane after landing it;

(+) Added a panel LIT to improve the night flight experience;
(-) Removed those irrelevant cabin bitmaps (cockpit right, left, ...) that were just memory eaters;
(=) Adjusted the frontal landing gear so that it works correct in turning the plane on the ground;
(=) Upgraded to X-Plane v5.60;
