Always operating alone, the reconnaissance Drakens needed good protection.
Here you can see the chaff/flare dispenser type KB
which could be carried under the right wing, in place of an external tank.
Just outboard of it is the antennas for the ECM system,
which together with the equipment on the side of the
rear fuselage, behind the cooling air intakes, and the
controlling unit was designated "Apparat 15".
In this photo, you can see the open housing for the brake
chute just behind the fin.
The reconnaissance squadron was the 1:st, and thus its
colour was red. Its badge can be seen on the
fin top of this aircraft. The text it "Akktu Stakki"
which is Saami and means "lone wolf". "U" is
the 21:st letter of the alphabet, and the wing's designation
is F 21.
The reconnaissance Draken had a total of seven cameras.
In the nose there were five. The small window
just behind the extended nose cone is the camera
sight.
The wings had one in each, where the guns were in the
fighter versions.
Another important piece of equipment was the tape
recorder where the pilot recorded his observations
throughout the mission.
Film is developed and interpreted in mobile vans.
