Swedish countermeasures

S 35E Draken countermeasures

[S 35E Draken, side]
[S 35E, countermeasures] Under the right wing of this S 35E Draken, the reconnaissance version, can be seen the pod "Kapsel KB" (Pod KB), which is a chaff and flare launcher, similar to the BOZ series in use with several air forces.

[ECM pod] The fixed ECM equipment on S 35Es during the later part of their service consisted of "Apparat 15" (Device 15). The components was a central controlling unit "Enhet L" (Unit L), Enhet A + Enhet B in the pod under the right wing, [Rear ECM] Enhet E and F under the left wing, Enhet C on the right side of the rear fuselage and Enhet D on the left side.

J 32E Lansen

The ECM version of Lansen has both internal and external equipment.

[J 32E Lansen] The internal equipment comprises the three nose antennas for "Ingeborg", which records signals in the S, C and L bands (and also is used to check that the frequency of the own jammers is stable).

Inside the nose radome is the horns for the jammer "G24", which exists in three separate versions, S, C and L band, together with the external jammer pod "Adrian", which works in the S and C bands, it's intended to jam ground and shipborne surveillance radars.

[J 32E Lansen] The external pod "Petrus", which looks identical to Adrian with radomes both fore and aft, operates in the X band and is mainly intended to jam, both with noise and deception, fighter and surface to air missile targeting radars. Petrus also functions as a radar warning receiver.

Other external equipment is the chaff dispenser BOZ 3, of which two can be carried. It was also used on A 32A and S 32C Lansens.

[J 32E Lansen] Among the internal equipment is also the "MERA" (Manöverenhet Radio) which can jam communications in the UHF and VHF bands.

The J 32E Lansens, rebuilt J 32B fighter versons, has been used for training others in ECCM methods. The J 32Es are scheduled to be retired in 1997 and will some time later be replaced in the role by ten modified SK 37 Viggens.

ECM pods on Viggens

[U 22 ECM pod]

U22

This is the U22 jammer pod, previously also known as "KA" (Kapsel typ A, pod type A). [SF 37 Viggen] Usually, if not always as it's not quite symmetrical, it's carried under the right wing.

[Dogtooth pod] At the dogtooth in the wing and at the top of the tail cone can be seen similar antenna pods as on S 35E Draken, on AJ/S 37 Viggens this is the RWR antennas for the system called APP 27 for "Apparat 27" or "Device 27". JA 37 Viggen has another type of RWR.

[Pod KB, front] [Pod KB, rear] The chaff/flare launcher pod is usually carried under the left wing is known as "KB", which was also used on reconnaissance S 35E Drakens as seen above.

U95

* The latest JA 37 Viggen upgrade, Mod D, includes the capability to carry an Ericsson Saab Avionics U95 ECM poc (under the inner right wing pylon). It's got a pointed radome at the front, a blunt rounted at the rear and two strakes on the sides.

It significantly enhances Jaktviggens EW capability and is also intended for the two-seat SK 37E version, which also carries other pods and internal equipment. About SK 37E at F 4's web site: SK 37E Viggen - text in Swedish, but there's photos of the equipment.

Modern expendable countermeasures dispensers

This and the photo at the top of the page shows a CelsiusTech BOP/A launcher mounted on a JA 37 Viggen, where it has been in service since 1987 with the designation BOY401. [Pyrotechnics launcher on Viggen]

They are mounted on a previously unused wing station just behind the main gear wells.

[Pyrotechnics launcher] It is photographed by me at the Swedish air force day at Ljungbyhed 25:th Aug 1996. Here, it's shown at the company display stand, together with the BOP/B model, made to fit at the rear of a weapons pylon, and a BOL 300.
[Pyrotechnics launcher BOP/B] Thus, valuable space for other stores isn't wasted.

Another countermeasures dispenser not wasting carrying space for other stores is the BOL 300 chaff launcher.
[Missile pylon/chaff launcher BOL 300] It is perhaps better known to some of you as LAU-138. In Swedish service it has been operational on JA 37 Viggen since 1995, designated BOL451.

It is a combined missile launcher and chaff dispenser, adopted by the USN for use on F-14s and F/A-18s. and has also been selected for use on the Harrier GR.7, the Tornado F.3, the EF 2000, JA 37 Viggen and JAS 39 Gripen.

The USAF is considering it for use on their F-16s.

Gripen can be fitted with 4 x BOL, 2 x BOP/B on the outer underwing stations, 4 x BOP/C in the fin root and has 4 x RWR in the wing tips and 2 x jammers in the nose and fin tip.

The Swedish designation for the BO series dispensers is BOYxxx (where xxx is a number), but which designation corresponds to what hasn't been made public at the time of writing.

Towed decoys

CelsiusTech Electronics has almost completed (March 1997) development and flight tests of a small copper cable disposable towed decoy, called BO2D, which is launched from standard 55 mm launchers.

Deliveries can begin in 1999.
