In general, one line stands for one squadron, sometimes for smaller units, in a few cases multiple lines per squadron if it operated multiple types. Only the more common types of aircraft are listed.
The transition dates between types are of necessity approximate, but within squadrons, transitions usually don't take long. Transitions within a wing are normally staggered, I've tried to put them in the right sequence and tried to list the first squadron on the first line -- but it's not always correctly noted.
More information: all aircraft types having served with the Swedish defence forces since 1898, photos and descriptions of the types serving with the Swedish air force since 1926. A map showing the location of the wings.
J = Jakt = Fighter
A = Attack
B = Bomb
S = Spaning = Reconnaissance
T = Torped
Tp = Transport
Sk = Skol = Trainer
In the "new" system, aircraft of the same type get the same numeral if it's got different designations for different roles. With more than one role designator, the first one denotes the primary role, the second (and third) the secondary role(s). Letters after the numeral denotes sequential subvariants.
Exceptions to the above are the SH 37 and SF 37 reconnaissance Viggen designations, where SH stands for Spaning-Havsövervakning = Maritime Surveillance and SF for Spaning-Foto = Photographic Reconniassance.
The wings are designated "F", which stands for "Flottilj" and a numeral.
In the beginning of 2000, the number of aircraft in the
Swedish air force was (approximately):
JAS 39 Gripen: 70, and increasing
JA 37 Viggen: ~130
AJS 37 Viggen: ~60
SK 37 Viggen: 14
SK 60: ~105
TP 84 Hercules: 8
other transports: 8

It is decided to reduce the wartime base batallions from 24 to 16. This, among
other things, means every batallion has to take charge of a larger geographical
area. The BAS 90 concept will be developed (the work started in 1993) into BAS
2000.
The abandoned airfields
(warbases including "road bases",
old air fields belonging to abandoned
wings and installations on combined
civilian/military airfields) are:
Sjöbo (noted as roadbase + air base),
Knisslinge,
Växjö,
Ålem (road base)
Hultsfred,
Säve (old F 9),
Lidköping,
Hasslösa,
Björkvik,
Strängnäs,
Västerås (old F 1),
Gimo,
Tierp,
Söderhamn (old F 15),
Sättna,
Hallviken,
Kubbe,
Åmsele,
Piteå and
Heden.
20 pilots have been trained and assigned to the fighter squadrons, six to the multirole squadrons and seven flight instructors to the flying school. The Sk 60B/C light attack role is obsoleted.
One more BAS 90 finished. In addition to this, some short runways has been built and facilities improved on some bases.
F 5 disbanded, training moved to F 10. F 15 disbanded, some aircraft transferred to other squadrons. F 16M disbanded, some Lansens moved to F 16, waiting for final retirement
The first Gripen squadron declared operational on Oct 1:st.
In addition to the combat aircraft, there have been four central transport squadrons and eight regional transport squadrons.
The air force's helicopters have been organised in five heavy (HKP 10) and three medium (HKP 3) air rescue groups.
Seven pilots have been trained and assigned to the fighter squadrons, four new flying teachers to the central flying school.
One of the two TP 85 Caravelle ELINT aircraft has been replaced by a S 102B Gulfstream IV.
FMV:PROV has one J 32B at Malmslätt, two J 32B and one J 32D at Vidsel.
The wartime base batallions have been reduced by eight full and the two short batallions, so base battallions number 16, in charge of about 20 air bases/fields.
All defence forces helicopter units have been organised in a common helicopter wing.
Two StriC and one training systems have been delivered.
An addition to the transport fleet was made with the purchase of a Cessna Citation II, designated TP 103.
The second S 102B has been delivered. Both Tp 85 retired.
FMV may retain some (2-3 J 32E, 1-2 J 32D) Lansens in service.
3 x Sk 61 and 8 x PA 31 transferred to Lunds University, TFHS
The nine aircraft repair batallions have been withdrawn and their functions integrated with the base batallions.
The size of the organization will be reduced, the likely number of wings by 2004 is five. The JAS 39 Gripen fighter squadrons will number eight, but they'll have the same number of aircraft as already ordered for 12 squadrons. The wartime air base organizations will be eight, of a new kind.
The first StriC companies have been activated.
Two FSR 890 (S 100B Argus) groups in service.

F 21 produces five base battallions, and was the first wing to have them all upgraded to BAS 90 standard.
F 6 and F 13 disbanded. One sqn JA 37 moved from F 13 to F 17. At F 10, one sqn J 35 disbanded.
On June 1:st the air force, army and navy are joined into the common defence forces.
SK 60 still retains the light attack role.
BAS 90 finishing is delayed, plans say 24 are to be ready in 2005.
16 pilots have been trained and assigned to the fighter squadrons, ten to the multirole squadrons and four flight instructors.

Vampire deemed to likely be the most easy aircraft in the air force to fly.
The air force consists of 47 squadrons.
The transformation of squadrons which according to the 1942 plan were attack squadrons to fighter squadrons was a deliberate decision based on the thinking that it was better to have a smaller number of attack squadrons which could act over a longer time under fighter protection instead of a larger number of less survivable ones.
F 18 hangars in bedrock finished
41 fighter squadrons equipped with propeller aircraft, four with jet aircraft.
12 attack squadrons at F 6, F 7, F 14 and F 17
33 fighter squadrons at F 1, F 3, F 4, F 8, F 9, F 10,
F 12, F 13, F 15, F 16, F 18
5 reconnaissance squadrons at F 11 and F 21.

A map showing the location of the air force bases in 1945, wings, wartime bases and civilian airfields used.
Hangars in bedrock for F 8 building start.
F 9 moved to permanent site at Säve.
Germany was the only nation which in 1939 had special tests to select aircrew. A Swede got some experience with it during the early 1940s, and in 1944 the Swedish air force started using phycological tests, based on a holistic view, to select aircrew.
During peak years, 200 pilots were trained per year.
