Fällkniven S1 is a medium sized
stainless knife I really like.
It's comfortable to hold and work with, has a good size both for fine work and some chopping, feels very sturdy, the convex grind with rolled edge holds the edge well.
I have two sheaths, a regular kydex and a leather dangler
to keep it out of the way from backpacks and the like.
You can have it with [at the time of writing] three different
sheaths, all available separately, the third is made of Cordura.
This kydex sheath is primarily intended for belt carry, but
the knife sits very securely in it, so I'm quite sure it's
suitable for other ways of carrying it. Sheath design is very
much like the one for the smaller
WM1.
The clip point is ground to get have the right amount of material at different parts along the blade to good strength and optimal balance.
Material in the handle is quite firm, but
with a little bit of
give. The checkering and shape gives a
good grip, but I'm not convinced
the checkering is really necessary.
In practical use the knife has proved itself to be very useful. For example, after chopping in the garden for half an hour, it's still sharp enough to easily slice tomatoes. It's good at cutting and some chopping while not so large and heavy it risks being left at home.
After six months of using it, my impression of this knife is that it's very good at the tasks I've put it to, the edge holds up very well and is easy to sharpen, it's very stainless even with "careless" use (although I've not been using it in or around salt water and the like).
In July 2000 the US Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division,
started testing of this knife, in December 2000 it and the F1,
both with black teflon coating, were approved for use by USN and
USMC aircrew use.
